The Department of Statistics was started in Mangaldai College with the introduction of Statistics subject in PU course in 1978. The degree course was introduced in 1984-1985 session and the Major course was started in 2000. Sri Punya Sarma was the founder teacher of the department who joined his service in 01-12-1979 and retired as Associate Professor on 31-12-2012. Another teacher of the department Sri Ramesh Ch. Sarma joined his service in 11-09-1988 and retired as Associate Professor on 31-08-2017. At present, our department has two permanent teachers: Dr. Ranjita Goswami, Assistant Professor and HOD, and Mr Pranab Das, Assistant Professor. There has been one vacant post since 2017. As per requirement, the college aut hority provides one or two guest faculties to ensure smooth classes. We have 51 students in our department with 34 studying in Honours course and 17 in HG/RC courses. The department actively engage students in different co-curricular activities along with curricular activities as per guidance of college authority. Our students have opportunities for higher studies and various job prospects. A good number of outgoing students have completed PG and B.Ed courses and some are pursuing Ph.D in Statistics in different universities. Some are doing PG and B.Ed courses. Our students have also qualified SLET/TET Exam and secured Assistant Professor position in reputed college, while others have found employment in nationalized bank (as Probationary Officer), HS schools (as Subject Teachers, Assistant Teachers) defence services, etc.

The Statistics department has a library in which there are 50 books and 15 journals. Some books are donated by our ex-students and teachers. These books are distributed among the students as per their needs or as per their syllabus and keeping the borrower�s records in the library register book. �Students can borrow one book for two days and after two days the student must return the book to the departmental library. �The main objective of the departmental library is for the benefit of our student. From our library, students can borrow the books easily and access the knowledge about the different courses of Statistics.
