Mangaldai college is a premier institution of higher education in Darrang District of Assam.The Sanskrit department had an enthusiastic start at intermediate level under the leadership of founder HoD. Dharmanath Shastri in the year 1951.Then it was introduced at undergraduate level in the year1969.The Major (now Honours) course was introduced in the year 1998 and has been running with Regular Course ( enrollment above 40 seats in honours).Renowned Sanskrit scholar like Shadasiv Chakravorty,Prabhat Chandra Sharma Shastri (Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award )Basanta Kr.Goswami, Bijoy Chandra Goswami,Dr.Bharati Kalita Goswami etc. graced the department.The department has a very consistent record of brilliant result. The student of this department clinched the laurel of Best Graduate of Gauhati University for three times and they are (1) Chitraranjan Sarma (3rd),(2) Karabi Sarma (2nd ) and (3) Binodini Garg (3rd ). In every year, Sanskrit Department is producing a number of graduates with major in Sanskrit. Dedicated services of the faculty members contributed immensely to its growth. At present(2023) the department is running with 90 students in total ( BA 2nd to 6th Sem ). Moreover, a Non-Formal Sanskrit Education Centre has been running under Rastriya Sanskrit Sansthan(now Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi) since 2017.There are two courses of studies in these centres. First is called “Certificate Course in Sanskrit Language” and Second is “Diploma in Sanskrit Language.” Any person desirous of Sanskrit learning is eligible for admission to “Certificate Course in Sanskrit Language.”In addition to the students, teachers, employees and officers of the concerned institution, admission is also open for general public. Only who have passed the First Course “Certificate Course in Sanskrit Language” conducted by the Rastriya Sanskrit Sansthan(now Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi)will be eligible for admission in the Second Course naming “Diploma in Sanskrit Language.” At present(2023) the Centre is running with 100 students in total (Certificate Course in Sanskrit Language – 70, Diploma in Sanskrit Language – 30) and already 290 student have completed the both course.
